Phil Hellmuth won his 12th WSOP Bracelet on Sunday and wrote his name with golden letters in the history of the poker game. Late in the evening on 10th June 2012 all the spectators looked at one person – the world record holder Phil Hellmuth. By winning the 12th WSOP bracelet he is two bracelets ahead of his closest rivals Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan – with 10 bracelets each.
Hellmuth’s win came in the $2,500 buy-in Seven-Card Razz tournament, held at the Rio in Las Vegas, USA. The poker legend is more famous with his Hold’em skills, but he showed everybody that the Razz game is also one of his specialties. The prize money he won was $182,793, but that’s the last thing Phil was thinking about when receiveing the golden bracelet. The “bad-boy” image, that Hellmuth made during the years quickly became the prototipe for a whole generation of young players who try to emulate the legend. Read the rest

Range merging is a method that refers to a counteraction to the players who try to catch a bluff using the bluff catching hands.
First let’s see what the bluff catchers are. The bluff catcher is a hand, that beats all bluffs, but does not have much value and can’t convince the poker player to bet with it. The reason that the players use bluff catchers is that very often the bet on the river has an irregular structure. This means that your bet is the ultimate for your current range and it is either a bluff, or the nuts .
For example if a poker player has J-J, it is hardly common for him/her to bet on board showing K-5-Q-Q-7. If somebody bets on the river that means that he/she has either a Q card or a better hand, while hands like K-J or J-J would prefer to see the showdown without betting anymore on that board. Therefore a bet on the river with that kind of board most commonly means that the player has either a very strong hand (nut), or a very poor hand (a hand that won’t win the pot at the showdown) trying to steal the pot with a bluff. Because very strong hands do not come up very often, players use bluff catchers in these situations.
